We know magic can be performeed without mana, Super Tier and Wild Magic both are deemed magic by Keeno's talent but neither use mana as YGGDRASIL defined it. The idea you brought up of 'fluff that became real' is interesting because from a certain standpoint, the native magical properties of this world work on empathy and just what we think of as 'fluff'. Guild Base NPCs have the same dressing. This manifests as actual physical characteristics such as Demiurge's abs or Shalltear's lack of breasts despite her model having them in the game. Now of course YGGDRASIL had no way to record this, but this world is somehow able to manifest this trait. This power of empathy in a physical sense is closer to a magic of reasonance in vague terms. In the Japanese community you have your various attempts to explain this, but one theory that's gained traction is the idea of kotodama. You can google this all you want, but basically it's the vagueness of language carries with it some magical property, and this is seen as manifested through flavor text becoming real. Tangentially, supporters of this world view cite how Maruyama from WN to Ln stopped using Engrish for Martial Arts and instead used kanji based names only. This bears mention because they see all native magic types as only expressable in kanji names and will have no Engrish. To convey this idea, it would be like you have X DnD spell but all the magic you orignally knew was written in latin roots, prefixes and suffixes.
