Curiously enough, this house lacked windows, though it had ventilationholes scattered throughout its walls. Like any other Lizardman, Zaryusu couldsee just fine in the dark. However, that did not imply they enjoyed living indarkness.That being the case, why did this leader live in a dark little hut like this?

The interior of the tunnelswere lit by lanterns containing naturally glowing oil. However, those lanterns
were spaced very far apart, so at times, entire sections of the tunnel wereshrouded in darkness. That said, all Dwarves had dark vision, which couldeasily overcome the darkness. Of course, this dark vision did not haveunlimited range, but it was enough to go from lantern to lantern

There was no light from the outside in the cave, and soon they wereimmersed in complete darkness. However, it posed no problems to Ainz, whohad dark vision. Shalltear, Aura, the other undead and the magical beasts alsopossessed that ability. At their level, mere darkness was not a disadvantage toanyone present.Zenberu, on the other hand, was being cradled like a princess by one of theundead.

[V11] 1.) Maruyama forgot 2.) Lizardmen don't possess Darkvision but only Low Light Vision 3.) Both scenes are accurate; Zenberu was just scared of the dark tunnel because: 3a: Lizardmen darkvision isn't as good as other races (limited max range eg 10 meters?) 3b: Zenberu was going through afterlife "darkness" PTSD or PTSD from his first visit and getting attacked 3c: Zenberu is claustophobic The volume 11 description implies Lizardmen lack dark vision but it is only an implication given Zenberu was only having "trouble". Given it doesn't come up despite going through other tunnels and narrow buildings, the problem seems to just be the darkness. Since Zaryusu and Zenberu are the same race, the Volume 4 detail should not contradict this detail giving Maru the benefit of the doubt. It's possible he mixed up the source data for lizardmen between games though.

We could suppose this was a case of unreliable narrator of course. Given Zaryusu's fear under a spell effect, it's possible Lizardmen are just instinctually afraid of the dark or its' nurtured by life in the forest and how going for land offerings was considered something worth acknowledging .

However, Mare was not displeased.That was because the ones who had made those offerings were filled withgenuine respect and reverence. For instance, fresh flowers did not grow in theswampland, but in the forests which were very dangerous to the Lizardmen ─they must have risked their lives to pick them.

“We won’t be entering the forest?”“Yes, because the forest is very dangerous. We can still deal with things likeJumping Leeches and Giant Beetles, but the Hanging Spiders which spit webs
at you from the trees and the Forest Worms which maul you from the groundwith their huge jaws are harder to handle.

After leaving E-Rantel, the sun was at its zenith, and the travelers could see avast stretch of dense and primeval dark green forest in the distance. The thicktree trunks stood tall, while their leafy branches spread wide. Because lightcould not penetrate into the depths of the forest, there was a feeling that theywould be swallowed by the blackness. The gaps between the trees looked like agaping maw waiting for prey to throw themselves into it, which contributed tothe sense of unease that they felt.

Then, there were the rangers, who formed hunting parties. Their main taskwas to catch fish, but the regular Lizardmen would help in that task as well.Thus, their most important job was their activities in the forest.Lizardmen were omnivorous, but their main diet was a kind of fish whichwas around eighty centimeters long, and they disliked vegetables and fruits.Even so, the hunters still had to enter the forest for logging purposes. The landwas not safe for Lizardmen; thus specialists were needed when they went tofell trees.

[V4] Since no fear is described in Volume 11 and Zenberu doesn't seem to echo fear later at any point, it's possible that scene was a misunderstanding: for example Zenberu could of seen Shalltear carried princess style at one point - heard the reason for it and mistakingly believed thatdue to his webbed feet that was just how one who was carried for ''difficulties' due to terrain.

The two of them ran at breakneck speeds along the beast paths of the forest,as though they were trying to cut through the vegetation. The terrain wasatrocious, with branches and twigs jutting out from all sides. However, theirdresses were not damaged in the slightest, and the high heels they wore easilypushed them over the terrible footing as they forged ever onward.The leading Vampire Bride carefully cradled Shalltea

Shalltear, who was lounging in the Vampire Bride’s arms — in other words,in a princess carry position — stretched her legs in annoyance.

The reason Shalltear was not running in the forest was because she felt itwas a bother, and because she did not want to dirty her shoes. There wasanother reason for that, but nobody here would speak it, or even think of doingso. Even in Nazarick, only a few people would dare bring it up to her fac

Ultimately you can believe any of these reasons you want ince all are plausible to some extent. Given it's lack of an exact mention in later volumes, and Zenberu's demeanor in other confined and dark places, it's most likely due to being in complete darkness, near a depopulated city as a precaution/misunderstanding of Shalltear's Vampire Bride taxi service, or a worry Zenberu's dragging tail/clumsy feet may give away their position etc.

Maruyama isn't perfect however, so it would be funny if he just fucked up and mixed up their traits

The Vampire Bride could of decided it would be bad to inconvenience Ainz even by a second to wait for Zenberu too so just yoinked him without his input.

That or Shalltear brought it up to them in consideration for Ainz and her being aware of the webbed feet pros/cons.

Perhaps the races from the outside world would not be able to bear thesense of pressure which the tunnels imposed on its occupants. However, it hadno effect at all on the underground-dwelling Dwarves. The tunnels might haveseemed narrow, but they were quite spacious to the Dwarves. Given that theaverage height of a Dwarf was around 130cm, a tunnel of around 180cm acrosswas broad enough for them.

The Dwarf — who trembled in both body and voice — brought them to asomewhat cramped room. Then again, it would probably not have beencramped for a Dwarf. It was just the right size for Aura and Shalltear. However,they had Zenberu there, who was large of stature. Just waiting in the room feltvery claustrophobic for him.

[V11] I forgot Zenberu was in the NBA. Maybe they had to carry him to reduce his cross sectional area to even fit?
