[Article Incomplete] Natural Absorption of Mana Items (New World Artifacts) vs Wild Magic Items; Lifeforce Rambling

Thesis: Wild Magic Items and Naturally Magical Items are described differently this will lead to exploring that difference and it's consequences

Premise: Ainz Possesses Arcane Vision and has encountered candidates for both

Basically Ziggy wants to scrutinize the following excerpt:

The magic weapons in this world were made by having a magic caster enchant a weapon produced by a blacksmith. In other words, a skilled magic caster was more important than a skilled blacksmith when it came to making a powerful magic weapon. However, there were exceptions to that rule. Fluder could make the stilettos which Clementine carried through his magical knowledge, but the same could not be said for Gazef’s sword.“Perhaps,”Fluder had begun by saying,Gazef’s sword was spontaneously created by the natural absorption of mana, or perhaps through the magic of theDragons.”

V11

Why?

The reason is because people often just assume Wild Magic explains everything. Ziggy's not so sure... Random magical weather and natural Gate portals suggest an alternativce could exist. So Ziggy's going to explore it.

People seem to just think Fluder's making shit up.

Platinum Iron Man Suit up lads (and ladettes????????). Time to get pedantic and autistic!

==============================================

It is clear that Razor Edge and the Wild Magic ring possess enchantments not from YGGDRASIL and can manifest powers in defiance of YGGDRASIL's rules (Razor Edge has an ability to bypass levels and stat defenses similar to invalidation despite it's own power level falling under the effect of such defenses normally). Now most people just assume Razor Edge was made by Wild Magic. Ziggy understands of course. It's the big McMuffin of Overlord that explains everything.

We can confirm that natural magic does exist. Supposedly. In before "DRAGONLORDS DID IT!" Sigh.... Anyway, it's not presented in folklore that dragonlords made the following and it doesn't match any dragonlord powerset we've heard of yet.

Then, there was the second trial — the land of molten magma. This sea of scorching heat shone with blinding radiance. It was an extremely dangerous region where inhaling a single lungful of searing air could char one’s lungs within the chest. The reason why lava could flow uncounted kilometers beneath the earth was most likely because this world was a magical one. There were naturally formed portals which were close to Gates in power, and they joined the magma flows of this region to those of a distant region.

[V11]

Squire Baraja. Could it be some sort of abnormal climate change?” That question came from Gustavo, who had picked up on what was going on before Remedios. These abnormal climate changes referred to usually impossible phenomena occurring in a large area. For instance, there might be a place where a large scale ritual spell gone wrong filled an area with toxic rot-gases, or a place where once a year, a desert might rage with sandstorms for a week, or perhaps a place where multi-colored rain fell at certain times.

[V12]

Ziggy however, suspects there is a subtle difference between Wild Magic items and Spontaneous Mana Absorption items (hereafter called New World NW Artifacts).  This is a means to distinguish them as different irregarldless of whether they were crated naturally or artificially. We will call them 'Artifacts' as they do not appear to be craft-able using conventional means (via Tier magic) nor do they appear to possess the descriptive quality of Wild Magic items(or rather a lack of a certain detail). Also since they occur naturally, they are sort of products or item drops that only occur on their own terms(presumably). Most importantly we are co opting a term previously used by Maruyama himself(Ziggy will elaborate later).

“Hoh! That Zenberu, hm? ...Umu. Are you saying that Frost Pain was also acreation of the Dwarves? Was it a gift Zenberu gave to Zaryusu as a sign of theirfriendship?”He had heard about the origins of the sword from Zaryusu. However, it would be wise to ask others about it as well.“That was an heirloom from days past, and it did not come from Zenberu.”“Is that so...”It was exactly as he had heard. However, there might be something therewhich the Lizardmen did not know about. There are many weapons in this world which could not be made inYggdrasil. Forexample, there’s that weapon with the passive ability to cut through defenses...The magic weapons in this world were made by having a magic casterenchant a weapon produced by a blacksmith. In other words, a skilled magiccaster was more important than a skilled blacksmith when it came to making apowerful magic weapon. However, there were exceptions to that rule. Fluder could make the stilettoswhich Clementine carried through his magical knowledge, but the same couldnot be said for Gazef’s sword.

[V11]

Confirmed Wild Magic items: the Wild Magic Ring

New World 'Artifacts': the White Dragon Bone Armor (no one remembers it getting enchanted by a dragon lord at least)

Candidate New World Artifacts: Razor Edge

For our investigation, our controls are the confirmed Wild Magic Ring as well as the White Dragon Bone Armor. For clarification:

Wild Magic items: Magical equipment crafted using wild magic(the magic of the dragon lords). These items do not appear magical to those with Arcane vision.*

New World Artifacts: Magical equipment that was not crafted but came about by some unknown natural process(or everyone's forgotten how to make them), but could of been crafted by strange methods. Appears magical by Arcane Vision(presumably), however may appear different from normal items of similar potency despite it's mana/data/level value(presumably). The fact remains these appear magical under YGGDRASIL's magical abilities but don't seem craftable by even New World tier mages.

If you've forgotten, this definition of Artifacts is not entirely new. It actually originates from the Web Novel(see Ziggy did elaborate later!).

.That was an Artifact that humans cannot make, huh. It was my first.Artifacts were the names of top class magic items. It was impossible to create them via human hands, and could not be made except by existences like gods, high rank dragons, demons and angels. Their magic power was huge, and un-breaking. According to one legend, they were items that could even bring one back from the dead.

It was the class of items that the 13 Heroes used several of, and there weremany adventurers that made it their dreams to βind.It was rare to the point that Gignal, an A Class adventurer, had never seen untiljust earlier. This was my second time. The one I saw was the treasure of the Kingdom, the Kingdom sword, and itwas exquisite.Oh, Mayor-dono. The treasures of the Kingdom, I want to see them once.Well, its probably impossible.

WN

As you can see, Razor Edge actually is described as an Artifact in the WN. But so too are items the 13 Heroes used which were items from the 8 Greed Kings (V7) supposedly at least. Due to the fact Artifacts from both worlds refer to things that you can't craft normally, Ziggy felt like the definitions should be elaborated on. It's not wrong to call these artifacts but there is a great amount of incestuous ambiguity right now in abusing Artifact as "thing we cannot make ourselves". That applies to a  lot of things.

Basically, an Artifact is for our purposes meant to reflect something you cannot make with any technology or magic available to you or anyone in your society. In this case, that's the broad Web Novel definition of Artifact.  As you can see, New World Artifacts and Wild Magic Items are subsets of this definition, where YGGDRASIL items, Artifacts and Cash Shop Items also contain two categories of items you cannot craft readily, even for Players despite being able to craft other items via data crystals.Similarly, something happened to wild magic so not even wild magic items are as readily craftable at the either the potency or ease as they once were.

Pulling back the curtain a bit, the Japanese fans already have a distinction between these two for obvious reasons in their own discourse. Mainly since YGGDRASIL items are called Artifacts and the fact a term exists in Japan already for the more NW nuanced word: OoPArts.

OoPArts or OOPARTS are

Out

of

Place

Artifacts

So there are Artifacts and OoPArts in their  discourse already. Ziggy being pedantic stems partly from this difference in the languages used between both communities and sub communities. You don't need to use NW Artifact or OoPArt but just understand what item type is being distinguished even if you reject it's categorization.

For a brief synopsis a native may describe an artifact actually being one of the following(if this is easier to digest):

 Web Novel Artifact:

  • YGGDRASIL Item
    • Player Crafted Item
    • YGGDRASIL Artifacts
    • Cash Shop Items
  • Wild Magic Item
  • Naturally Occurring??? Magic Item (New World Artifact)

Now YGGDRASIL items are craft-able still in the New World but only some, and it requires extremely specialized materials ie data crystals so effectively they are WN Artifacts for the sake of discussion in a New Worlder's POV. Similarly, Dragon Lords still exist so crafting Wild Magic Items is not impossible just extremely rare and supposedly difficult. And it doesn't seem anyone understands why New World Artifacts are born just as naturally spawning undead and monsters seem to just pop out. What we can see is that these items possess powers no one in their society can recall or should not have existed (the Lizardmen remember 6th tier magic but no one remembers a spell operating as the bone armor's enchantment does similarly magic casters have never had a strong role in Re Estize yet a sword with a strange enchantment exists).

Their usual conversation brought a smile to Tsa’s face, and then it noticedthe old lady’s finger.Hm? The ring seems to have vanished. Where did you put it? I recall nobodyshould be able to take anything from you... but thatisa powerful magic itembeyond the domain of humanity.
That item was not something that could be simply given away.It was a magic item made through the use of Wild Magic. The power ofmagic today was polluted and distorted, so making another such item was verydifficult. As one of the rare few practitioners of Wild Magic, it wanted verymuch to ask her where exactly the ring had gone.

V7

*Ziggy's primary piece of evidence (or rather observation of an omission) for these definitions is that upon seeing Gazef's ring, the wild magic ring, Ainz did not see it as a magic item first but actually as a wedding ring despite having Arcane vision, and Gazef being a warrior (someone with equipment for combat). This is strange as in context, Ainz is a Player who just transferred over but if we assume Ainz did see it as a magic item it would consequently mean a piece of gear was magical AND just a wedding ring for a ritual reason not pondering what enchantment a wedding ring may have. Now clearly this ring is a magic item. And even in the sidestory Ainz makes note of the Night Lich 4D chess master's necklace as as being enchanted but not actually a proper magic item. What Ziggy is trying to emphasize is that Ainz can't SEE it's a magic item, apparently. We can confirm this isn't an oversight because:

Similarly, Pandora's Actor also encountered the Platinum Armor yet could only suppose it was enchanted, he could not confirm it. In both cases the individual had Arcane Vision (the same skill in fact even if by proxy) but inferences were used toward the item's identity instead of a clear and definitive ability to see it was magical.

(Much Pedantic Such Wow. Sasuga Ziggy)

In the game, demi-human and heteromorphic races unlocked racial skills when they reached certain levels. An Overlord like Momonga had the following skills:

ArcaneVision

V1

Gazef had taken off his armor and carried no weapons with him.He was bruised all over and half his face was swollen up, like a strange-looking, misshapen ball. Yet, a fire burned within his eyes.Ainz turned away, as though he had seen something brilliant. His eyes reflexively went to the ring Gazef wore on his left ring finger. So he was married. It’s probably good that his wife won’t need to shed tears forhim.

V1

He was dressed in a suit of white armor, which shone with a luster not born of metal. The armor radiated a faint magical aura. It was one of the Four Treasures —the White Dragon Bone. This armor was made from the cold-infused bones of the Frost Dragons which laired within the Azellisian Mountain Range. Of course, armor made of mere bones — even the bones of powerful beings like Dragons — could not possibly be magical. Yet, somewhere along the line, that suit of armor had taken on magical properties. The problem now was that said properties might have been the result of a curse. That was because the White Dragon Bone converted intellect into defensive strength. If an intelligent person put it on, it would become harder than steel— it might even be able to rival the strength of mythril, or the legendary metal adamantite. However, the lost intelligence would not return even if the armor was removed. That was why the legends surrounding that item said it was cursed

V4

"Now Ziggy, we can't just assume the description of the magic bone armor counts because Ainz didn't see it."

...That is true imaginary audience member (the only person that could possibly read this shit). However, my inner cynic, you've made a fatal mistake!

"NANI!?"

My basis for including the White Dragon Bone armor as a non-wild magic item doesn't stem from if Ainz counts it or not. But rather, Lizardmen at the very least see it as magical AND see it the magical equipment of POP NPCs as magical. And they don't have Arcane vision.

Zaryusu stopped there. He did not want to continue, because he would be afraid if he continued to speak, but he had to say it:

“...Those look like magic weapons.”Crusch nodded steadily from beside him.All the weapons wielded by the skeleton army were magical in nature. Some had flaming swords, while others had hammers crackling with electricity. Some had pikes whose heads were sheathed in green light, while others had scythes which dripped a viscous purple fluid.“Not just that. Take a look at their armor and shields. They’re all...enchanted as well.

[V4]

They were dressed in grand breastplates, like the sort a country’s royal guard would use. Their shields were emblazoned with a griffin motif, and they wielded all manner of weapons, in addition to composite longbows on their backs. In addition, all this equipment glowed with the light of magical power

[V7]

Now this is pretty galaxy brain surface shit since you can SEE these things emitting elemental powers or glowing. But that's exactly also the most important detail. The armor also EMITS shit! Now the ring ain't so obvious. Tsa seemed to notice it was gone but you could argue he didn't see it on her or it could be he didn't sense it?

The armor radiated a faint magical aura. It was one of the Four Treasures —the White Dragon Bone.

[V4]

Ziggy is glossing over spotting magic items but whatever. My point is that Ainz has encountered this ring more than once but never brought it up as a magic item. So Ziggy's explanation is that unlike magic of the world now, wild magic items do not radiate Arcane Signatures (items that can be seen by Arcane vision).

"But Ziggy then doesn't that mean all magic items glow and shit so no glow = wild magic item?"

Umu. It would seem that way. HOWEVER. We have precedence already that not all magic items radiate power the same way. Zaryusu, a non magic caster could tell these items on the POPs were magic, but an actual Arcane caster and non casters couldn't tell at first Enri's Horn was magical right away.

“This is a magic caster from the Magician’s Guild. He’s going to perform asimple check, so please wait.”The soldier gestured to Enri to remain seated, and then nodded to the magiccaster.“I’ll leave this to you, then?”“Of course.”The magic caster took a step toward Enri, and then he cast his spell.“[Detect Magic].

...

After that, the magic caster squinted his eyes. He looked like a beast sizingup its prey. Yet,Enri remained calm despite being subjected to a gaze thatrattled even the soldiers, who were used to this sort of thing. As they saw this, all the soldiers could think wasNo wonder.Someone who could remain calm under such a mighty gaze could not be asimple village girl. At the very least, she must have had experience in life-or-death struggles against monsters or people who wanted to take her life. Thesight before them only cemented the impression in the soldiers’ hearts. You can’t deceive my eyes. You’re hiding a magic item. It’s on your waist.”

...

“You mean this?”Enri produced a small horn from underneath her clothing, small enough thatit could fit into both her palms. The soldiers might not have understood itssignificance even if they had seen it.“...Is that a magic item?”“That’s right. You’ve been deceived by her appearance. That thing is imbuedwith powerful magic. The soldiers were speechless. If this was an item the magic caster consideredpowerful, then how mighty was it?

V8

Now we should mention that Lizardmen have better senses than other races like humans.

It's important to note Detect Magic isn't perfect however. Even Ainz uses it  in addition to his skill and other spells.

Gringam nodded to the arcane magic caster — the wizard — and hiscolleague cast a spell in response.Detect Magic— I can’t sense any magical mechanisms around, unless they’re hidden by concealing spells.”

[V7]

Normally, Ainz would have gone to the camp by himself and used GreaterMagic Vision,Detect Magic and other such divination spells to examine the scene, but he felt that there was no need to do so. In addition, Demiurge ought tohave investigated what magic items the demihumans possessed ahead of time.Even if something had slipped the net, there ought to have been nothing therewhich could harm Ainz. If there was, then it would have been more eye-catching.After that, he went to recover the equipment from those three demihumans. As expected, nobody had dared loot the corpses, and so Ainz recovered theirmagical items without incident. Of course, he had an idea of how powerfulthose items were from the mana they contained, but he still held out hope for something bizarre or unusual.
He dumped them onto the bed and prepared to magically investigate eachand every one of them

[V13]

Right? You get it. Now then, itis my turn for a question, but I dont really have one...Ainz looked around whilehe pondered, Ah, right. The armoryouarewearing reminded me of it, so Ill ask about that sword. The sword that Gazef Stronoff wielded, whos currently in possession of it?It is currently under the safekeeping of a man named Brain Unglaus.Brain Unglaus? Ahh, that man. When he dueled Gazef, there was someone by that name between the two men who had witnessed said duel. However, given how long ago that was, he could barely remember his appearance.Although he planned to turn the capital into ashes,he still planned to recover a few items, one of which being Gazefs sword.

[V14]

Pay close attention: Ainz saw these items were weak by data level but now he is actually hoping ,magic items may still have a strange or abnormal enchantment. After finding Razor Edge(V9) this is no idle fantasy - New World artifacts may not match YGGDRASIL in Data Level but in terms of possible effects they can surpass them in terms of scope or exploits. If Razor Edge is truly a New World Artifact, and it can even damage world class items this isn't a delusion either - world class items and artifacts would become sunderable - something impossible for YGGDRASIL methods and technology but not necessarily so in this world. That is probably a pipe dream but as it can violate one rule of YGGDRASIL the possibility remains it can violate another.  The fact is Ainz's curiosity about Razor Edge in Volume 9, Volume 11, and his statement about strange enchantments can be interpreted as those being connected.

Ziggy's basis for Wild Magic isn't radiating power the same way actually has basis beyond this special case of a YGGDRASIL artifact. Remember, Fluder, Arche, and Ninya's teacher can see magical auras but can only really distinguish power in Arcane casters to any great extent. This establishes a precedent: things (beings and objects) can be magical in visually distinct ways.

“If it’s convenient for you... would you like to meet my master? Master’stalent lies in detecting an individual’s magical power. If you were born withmagical potential, Master should be able to sense it. When it comes to arcanemagic casters, Master can even differentiate between them by the tiers ofmagic which they can cast.

...

“...What is this ability like?”“Ahh, according to Master, we magic casters radiate something like an aurafrom our bodies. The more adept one becomes in magic, the stronger this aurabecomes. Master has the ability to see these auras.”

[V2]

Of particular note was her Talent. Those miraculous eyes of hers had savedHekkeran and the others countless times. If one had to name Arche’s Talent, perhaps calling it the Mystic Eyes ofRevelation might be appropriate.Apparently, all arcane magic casters radiated an invisible aura of magic.Arche’s talent allowed her to perceive this aura, and understand which tier ofspells someone could use.

V7

Fluder’s eyes should have been able to see an image superimposed over her. However, he could not see it now, which left him speechless from shock andpuzzlement.Fluder’s natural Talent was the ability to see the auras around arcane magiccasters, and thus the tier of spells they could use. However, Fluder’s talent could not sense the auras from around them, despite hearing that the Beautiful Princess Nabe of Darkness was an arcanemagic caster.Protection from divinations? That was the only possibility, but that in turn raised new questions of itsown. Why had she warded herself against divinations? Normal adventurerswould not erect such defenses. That was because using their strength on suchmatters was too troublesome and few situations arose where one needed to beconstantly aware of such things.

V7

That said, it is definitive that the ring is a magic item however despite Ainz's vision not seeming to be able to tell it was anything more than just a ring.

Climb nodded his head vigorously, and activated his ring’s power. This ring, made by the Dragon Lords using Wild Magic, contained a spell that couldtemporarily increase a warrior’s strength. If the strongest man in the KingdomGazef Stronoff used it, he could step into the realm of heroes, but Climb hadnot reached that state yet.

V6

As far as Razor Edge is described:

Another seven demons were slashed through like a hot knife through butter. That sharpness made her think of Razor Edge, the sword that could cutthrough anything, and it scared the demons senseless

V6

And finally, Razor Edge, a magic sword crafted inpursuit of absolute sharpness, which could carve through enchanted armor likethe proverbial hot knife through butter.

V9

Weakly enchanted objects like this cannot harm this body of mine.Incidentally, this shortsword is imbued with about as much data —or rather, asmuch mana— as that sword you bear, Stronoff-dono. However, your sword canharm me, in clear defiance of what I know to be true. Could I request thatsword after I win?”

V9

Pay attention. Ainz or Ainz(PA) do not even contemplate that these items are X level strong despite having used that exact sense numerous times passively to boot. In particular they do not note them being weak or strong or even magical as a fact.

The weapons had a similar luster as the armor, it was then highly likely that they were not silver, but platinum instead. Given that was the case however, it created more questions than it answered. Ignoring the monetary value of the precious metal, platinum had no special magical properties at all. He could not fathom what advantages could be granted by creating weapons and armor out of it. The most likely explanation was that it was only platinum-coated, to hide the true metal the equipment was made out of. An example he could think of was the Golem he had just learned was in Kyouhukou’s room. There were other examples of the same technique being used in Nazarick as well. The next most likely explanation was that it was a metal that was identical to platinum in appearance — but Ainz was not well-versed in the types of metal in this world.

V14

It was like a high-level warrior had lobbed it at him, Ainz could not dodge it at all. If this weapon were not enchanted, it would be nullified by his immunity to non-enchanted projectiles, but no matter which way Ainz sliced it, it had to be enchanted. If that was the case, Ainz stood still, mimicking the stance his opponent had adopted as he took the hit

V14

Ainz had seen his opponent’s immediate loss of HP when he had activated that ability through his [Life Essence] spell. [Mana Essence] picked up nothing in contrast, meaning that his foe was of a pure warrior build with no mana at all.

V14

The hammer returned to Riku’s side. The four weapons that surrounded Riku were different from before: they were all glowing white

V14

Basically, items crafted with Wild Magic appear to be not be magical based on Arcane vision but Magic Items suspected to be born of spontaneous mana absorption do appear magical(New World Artifacts), but also appear distinct. Ainz expressed curiosity at Razor Edge, a rarity despite it's data value and the White Dragon Bone Armor was described to glow faintly in defiance of it's strength(can rival adamantite ie data levels in the 20s or higher). It is implied in Volume 13 even weak items by data level can have strange or powerful effects.

It's fairly possible it's similar to how New Worlders saw the Horn of the Goblin General,  it's magical but you can't tell at first glance.

Looking in more general terms, as Wild Magic Items are made with Wild Magic, and Wild magic casters can cast magic not using MP or mana as defined by YGGDRASIL(see Cure Elim and Tsa), it makes sense that they can be magical items that do not radiate mana in a signature Arcane vision (as it comes from a foreign magic system) can see but Dragon Lords and others can sense their nature to an extent just as people who use native 'magic' (wild magic and martial arts) seem to be keenly aware of things like undead(smell of the undead V7 V12) or can see past the high tiers of invisibly from YGGDRASIL(V14). As Maruyama points out, you can supposedly still analyze a Wild Magic Item with Tier Magic, so it's not like it isn't a magic item, just a different kind of one alien to aspects of system but rather it's still treated as one to some extent.

The strange part is that Ainz can still see data values but only classifies some magic items as magic items (more on this later). Thus, my non-existent readers, you now have the reason why Ziggy wanted to segregate these items from the normal Macguffin of Wild magic.

=====

Turning to possible mysteries there is the Mystery of Lost White and the Orb of Death :

Narberal advanced into the chapel, a black orb in her hand. It looked uneven, like a pebble one might find by the side of a river, and it did not seem veryvaluable.“...What is that?”“It seems to be something which the inferior lifeform(flatworm)I foughttreasured deeply. However, I do not know what effects it has...”“Is that so?”Narberal the NPC knew far fewer spells than Ainz, and most of them werecombat spells. This was why she could not appraise its value.Ainz picked up the orb, and cast the same spell he had just now.All Appraisal Magic Item.”

[V2]

And then the undead being which lay flat on the ground crumbled to nothing,as though a long time had passed for it, leaving only its gear to roll along theground. Among them was an important item that Keno had mentioned – acrystal wand

Suzuki Satoru took the wand he had picked up just now from his inventory. He looked it over, then put it back and teleported

....

At the same time, he used his spells to see what kind of magic was imbued into those items. The first one he investigated was a staff. After seeing the magic it contained, he called out to Keno, despite feeling alittle embarrassed.Excuse me, but could you come over and take a look at this item?

Is this the resurrection item you mentioned earlier? The notion in his heart had been validated; this was an item the undead beinghad abandoned when he had invaded.

It was a transparent wand, carved out of a gigantic crystal and further workedupon. Its name was Lost White. If what she said yesterday was right, then Suzuki Satoru believed that the spellcontained within it ought to be the fifth-tier divine spell [Raise Dead]. But ac-cording to his investigations just now, the spell’s effects were slightly different.Or rather, it looked like a wand, it should be usable as a wand, but fundamen-tally, it was something else entirely.

...

As Suzuki Satoru picked up a silver necklace, he knitted his nonexistent eyebrows. This isn’t a magic item ...it’s an enchanted necklace. Is this kind of accessory instyle? One could not equip multiple magic items to the same item slot. While onecould wear many magical items around their neck, he had heard from Kenothat only the powers from the item that had been last put on would be us-able, so it would seem that principle was the same in this world as it was inYGGDRASIL.

While he did not particularly mind if that undead being was the sort of fel-low who adorned himself with pointless ornamentation, it did not seem to bethe case. He did not have any other non-magical items besides this necklace. There must be some meaning to this.

Keno-san, I’m sorry to interrupt while you’re busy, but could you help metake a look at this necklace?

Huh? Ah, yes ...let’s see, it doesn’t look like letters. Are they ...marks?

Sidestory

We can try to analyze this with our new refined definitions.

Lost White.. As far as Satoru could tell it was using a variant of a resurrection spell but it was clearly not one exactly. The way he took it out again to study it and also could tell it was a magic item suggested that it may not be a Wild magic item by our working taxonomy (Wild Magic Items vs New World Artifacts). In that case, it may be a New World Artifact instead. The way it's formed from some natural substance (crystal) that was then shaped into something is similar to how our confirmed New World Artifact the White Dragon Bone Armor was made of bone and Razor Edge appears to be some gem substance in illustrations(V9 Obi, Season 3 ED, Season 3 Cover).

Fundamentally these are all things that could be left sitting in the ground for long periods of time. There seems to be some connection in this world to time spent in a given location or ground proximity and gaining power... for some reason? Are Souls and Mana weighed down by gravity? The fact is objects/things lingering in areas bustling with a sort of life (or unlife) become saturated in it. At least herbs do.

“That’s right. Incidentally, the fact that we use all-natural ingredients in our potions is a point of pride for us! Well, they’re only about ten percent more effective than those of the competition.” “That ten percent can be crucial to people who frequently put their lives on the line. To think you sell better potions for the same price… as expected of the Bareare Apothecary, which built its reputation on selling high-quality potions.”

[V2]

“That’s enough! You’ve taken in more than enough negative energy!” The black sphere in Khazit’s hand drew the graveyard’s darkness into itself, and it seemed to be glowing faintly. The slow heartbeat she felt from earlier seemed stronger than before.

[V2]

“Ah, under normal circumstances, it’d probably be the undead. If the undeadreally have taken over these ruins, then we’ll need to clear them out andconsecrate the place to disperse the negative energy, else it’ll be bad, right?”“Like you said, it would be very bad. Leaving the undead be will only lead tothe appearance of more powerful undead. That’s why powerful undead oftenappear in places like ruins and so on.”

[V7]

After passing the huge statue, they ascended a long, gently sloping flight of stairs that seemed to be made of the same material as the stone sarcophagus, and the entrance to the central mausoleum stretched before them. “‘Tis the stench of the dead.” “Yes, you’re right. It’s a common smell on the Katze Plains.” Hekkeran expressed his agreement with Gringam’s muttering. While it was not as nauseating as the vile odor of decay, the faint stench of undeath unique to graveyards hung in the cold air. There were undead present in such a well-kept tomb

[V7]

You get the idea, that it seems areas get saturated like in battlefields and undeath. Shit's weird. This could explain why Cure Elim, DDDL, and BDL were on those mountains or caverns at least? Maybe it gives wild magic users some benefit?

Still this would partially explain the GPS isekai theory. That is people always wondered why Ainz was transported to the human nations. After the sidestory however, it's become more in vogue to believe Ainz or the Player with the world class item at the time of transfer is brought to a location of similar beings. The Great Gods happened to be in a region with humans and many have human offspring. The All Talk Sage happened to end up in the Center Region by Minotaurs. And Satoru went to Keno's nation filled with undead for kilometers. Even Nazarick ending up by Katze due to the Throne makes some sense in that case. It also explains Leader popping up in this area during the Demon God Extermination.

Ziggy is just saying that it's not complete head canon if you start looking at these details as fragments of a wider scale aspect of this world - environmental saturation.

Bonus:

Ziggy has always been curious about Guu/Jugem's sword actually.

"B-But why doh? It's trash~"

Hai hai imaginary reader-kun (or -chan??????????????)... But it drives my autism bonkers! REEEEEEEEEEEE

The one which caught Ainz’s eye was the Troll standing at the head of thesemonsters. It was more muscular than the other Trolls, and its ugly face exudedconfidence. It was better equipped than the other Trolls too.It wore leather armor which looked like it had been sewn together fromseveral animal hides. Its mighty arms bore a greatsword which was larger thanthe ones which Ainz used in his Momon guise. The greatsword seemed to be magical, and the central fuller oozed a slippery liquid towards its edge.

....

“—What’s that?!” Panic crept into Jugem’s voice. “Is that a Troll out there?”It looked different from an Ogre, but it was about the same size. It lurchedstiffly toward the defenders, emitting an oppressive presence as it came. In itshand, it held a greatsword with an unnatural air about it.A moist substance flowed from the middle of the blade to its edges. That must be some form of magic.

..

Ainz picked up the greatsword which had fallen to the ground. It was farlonger than Ainz was tall, but thanks to the basic principle of magic arms and armor, it shrank down to a size which best fit Ainz.If Ainz tried to swing a sword which he could not equip, he would be forciblydisarmed, but just picking it up did not pose any problems to him.

...

“Should I strengthen that village’s fighting power? In that case, perhaps thismagic weapon might be the best choice. Besides, there’s no value in bringing itback to Nazarick.”

[V8]...

“Umm, ahem! Speaking of which, Juugem-san, can you use that magic swordwell? I heard it’s not like normal swords, and using it is tiring.”The greatsword which Jugem was holding had been obtained in the raid several days ago.“I’ve gotten used to the sword’s weight and center of gravity, so I can use itas well as my old sword. Its sharpness and so on are much better than theother one, but that’s a magic weapon for you. However... the poison in here, itweakens the people it cuts, but it’s a bit strange...

“It is? Is it a powerful effect?”“Well, it’s not a particularly strong poison. Someone on my level can resist iteasily. However, against weaker opponents...

[V8]

Jugem swung the magic greatsword he had taken from the Giant of the East. The soldier blocked the strike he had made with all his might. However, hecould not fully neutralize the force of the blow, and he lost his balance for amoment.

[V9]

The attacks were aimed at the unarmored parts of his body and they cut himopen.Rather than pain, all Jugem felt was heat oozing out of two points on hisbody.Jugem grit his teeth, and activated his special skill. His sword changeddirection, striking at the soldier that slashed at him from the side.Goblin Blow! The mighty stroke cleaved through the weak spots of the soldier’s chainmailand dealt a grievous wound to the flesh beneath. In this moment, the soldierstarted twitching. This was the magic power of the greatsword poison. However, it wouldseem his opponent had partially resisted it and it had not taken him out of thefight.

[V9]

It seems to change size like a YGGDRASIL or tier magic item. Similarly Ainz considered it quite weak in fact. Yet, there is something off about it's poison ability:

Success : ??? (takes out of the fight)

Resisted: Starts twitching (poison damage)

Failed: Normal strike (melee damage only)

It's actually stratified as you can actually resist the effect partially or fully. Whatever the actually successful effect is, it resembles Level Dependent factors actually, similar to things like the Death Knight's level dependent Squire Zombie effect. It's an all or nothing type of ability closer to an Overkill only effect.

It doesn't scale on the user's level at all so it's a pretty weak enchantment but it makes you ponder for a moment: why would a sword have a poison only useful against weaklings you can already crush without poison?

The regular poison effect seems fine, but why does it have special properties against weaklings? It's extremely strange.  Ziggy suspects against weaklings it actually can siphon power or similar.

it’s not like normal swords, and using it is tiring

V9

This line makes no sense unless we factor in this sword seems to be fueled by something else besides it's own internal mana (daily use limit, cool down limit, etc). Unlike a Holy Sword with a once per day ability or a continually on magic effect, this sword seems to secrete poison based on drawing from the user's power source instead as a resource. So perhaps this successful poison activation on weaklings is meant to only siphon power on an overwhelming difference in level? IE it draws power from those you strike and can't resist the weapon?

It's almost like a parasitic leech. It draws from it's user or anyone it can get in contact with (theoretically). This isn't the only weapon we see of this type but unlike YGGDRASIL versions, these items seem to draw power even from non mages like Jugem.

This contrasts nicely with Neia's borrowed amulet that used her own mana to cast but Ainz fully admits she probably could not use it as a Warrior type.

Finally, the necklace was an item that consumed mana to cast the Third Tierdivine spellHeavy Recover. While one could use it indefinitely as long as onepossessed sufficient mana, it consumed more magical power than casting itdirectly. Given Neia’s meager reserves of mana, it was best for her to considerit a one-use item.

...
“Why is that? These items will be useful to you in the fighting to come, will itnot? After all, you are a warrior-type, and you lack mana, so you might not evenbe able to use that necklace’s ability. Why don’t you take it and give it a try?

[V13]

There is actually precednece for this ability to be a New World only type ability. In Overlord, there is actually a relative power level based mechanic that is universal: killing intent. It somehow can not only convey will but it's influence is affected by the sender and receiver 's power levels. And it' snot just level sense, or just an antagonism detector alone.

Also, you are not to project your murderous intentionseverywhere

[V5]

ITt can’t be—”I didn’t hear anything, the man wanted to say, but he was frozen in place.“Are you calling me... a liar?”He did not know when Sebas had stood up, but now his razor-sharp gazetransfixed the man. Those were fearsome eyes. Those vicious eyes stopped the man’s breathing, as though they possessedthe ability to physically crush his heart within his chest.“Are you saying I would tell a lie for the likes ofyou?”“Ah, no, ah...”The man’s throat croaked, and then he gulped. His eyes moved, fixating onSebas’ arms. He must have remembered the consequences of getting carriedaway.

...

Even Sebas could not muster up his motivation in front of that utterlypathetic attitude, and his killing intent vanished.

[V5]

One of the men — the one who looked the most muscular — clenched hisfist. Compared to him, the old man seemed far inferior, be it in the sturdinessof their bodies, the bulging of their muscles, or their bloodthirsty brutality.Surely the younger man could easily send the old man flying with but a swingof his fist. The people around them realized this, and gasped in horror at thetragedy which was about to befall the old man.Amidst all this, only Climb felt that something was strange.Indeed, the younger man looked stronger. Yet, Climb could sense an aura ofabsolute power coming from the old man.

[V5]

“However — and I pray you will forgive my bluntness — you have no talent.Proper training will take a very long time. However, I do not have that time. Iwish to train you in a way that will show results quickly, but it will be an...arduous process.”Climb gulped again. The look in Sebas’ eyes sent a chill down Climb’s spine. Those eyes were filled with unbelievable power, exceeding the spiritualpressure which Gazef exerted when serious. Thus, he could not respond rightawa

[V5]

Climb had won this gamble, but he raised his sword in response to a suddensurge of killing intent.“!”Climb grit his teeth against the pain which came from his side and his rightupper arm. He might have broken several ribs, but fortunately he could stillmove.

...

Pain shot through the hand holding his throat and fresh blood spewed forth, bringing with it a disgusting sensation of wet clothing. Had he not sensedSucculent’s murderous intent, or if he had not promptly sacrificed a hand to

save himself, his throat would have been cut open.

[V5]

No way,Brain though as he answered.I hadFieldactive, didn’t I? It might have a narrow radius, but I should havesensed him if he had come running up to us. But I didn’t sense him at all... Until now, only that monster Shalltear Bloodfallen could do that. Well, I had my suspicions whenhe emitted his murderous intent back then, but now I’m sure of it — he’s the match ofthat monster. Where does he come from?

[V5]

ts body was excessively large, and its silhouette was utterly evil. It was asthough a god had drawn forth the essence of violence and brutality from allhumanity, concentrated it, and given it physical form. Its rotted face had noexpression, yet they could all sense a brilliant, shining hatred burning in itsempty eye sockets. And there were five of them. The vast body of the one at their head was carrying a large stone table. Thefour behind it held various utensils and many chairs.None of them had any hostile intent.

[V9]

You lot, protect Ainz-sama.”After giving an order to the black-armored warriors behind her, the beautyreadied her bardiche in turn. The spectators originally believed that the winner of this confrontationwould be Momon. But the battle aura radiating from the two of them denied it.They could feel that the beautiful woman was a warrior who was Momon’sequal.

...

She bowed to Ainz, and then pointed her bardiche at Momon. However, hermurderous intent from just now was absent.

[V9]

He could not tell the age of her skin when inspecting her face due to all thecosmetics she wore, but the fact that she was covering it up meant that shemust have felt her age too. In addition, surely that floral fragrance surroundingher was a sign of using perfume to mask her old folks’ stench, was it not?Ho.”Nasrene narrowed her eyes and an icy chill filled the air in the tent. This wasa physical, not psychological phenomenon.

[V13]

Upon hearing what Evileye had said, Azuth put on a displeased expression and stared at her. Though they could feel a sense of pressure from his gaze alone, none of Blue Rosebacked down. To Evileye especially, it felt just like a soft breeze.

[V14]

Just as complicated emotions arose in Lakyusheart, Tia nervously said, boss. At the same time, a mans voice came from the corridor, Youre all on-time!The three who had been standing by the door, Tia, Tina, and Gagaran, appeared to be pushed along by an unseen power into the room. A man and a woman followed after them. The one who walked in front was a young man.All ten of hisfingers had rings adorning them. A gentle smile shone from his face.Behind him was a tired woman. Her clothes were loose and she walked in a way that said she did not want to walk at all. An unusually giant hat sat on her dome, covering most of her face.Lakyus raised her guard. Her companions were being suppressed on a biological level that is to say, from raw power alone. Both of the visitors were capable of giving the world-famous Adamantite-ranked adventurer Lakyus a fright she could not put into words.Yet, once the person behind them showed up, the atmosphere changed more so than ever.

That mans giant body slowly inched its way into the room. His appearance was that of an axe-wielding barbarian. An intense, overwhelming pressure emanated from him that made them feel as though the space around them was being distorted. The two in front of them were indeed strong. But, that man is far more powerful than them both.

[V14]

“The fact that you do not realize why makes it all the more mirthful!”The mood in the air changed. Suzuki Satoru had always been a commoner. Though he had experienced things like presences and killing intent over his five years of travel, the truth was that he did not quite understand them. Even so he could sense the Dragon Lord’s fighting spirit. However, it was not being serious.

[SS]

Now let's reconsider the Dwarven Armory Sword.

Gondo began searching again, and Ainz picked out several items whichseemed more magical than others.“Hm? This is...?”Among those items, Ainz discovered a sword. It might well be the most magical item out of everything here.“Umu... going by levels, it would be around level 50, then?”It was long enough to be considered a longsword, and it was intricatelydecorated. He was not sure if this was made inYggdrasil. But if it was an item of thisworld, then its magical power would beggar belief. Ainz felt the body of thesword. It was smooth and even.“What a beautiful and exquisite sword. But there are no runes carved on it.How could that be?

...

Ainz gripped its hilt. In that instant, the sword vibrated. It felt as thoughmana was flowing through it.“This is... something even I can use?”Ainz could not use longswords due to his class restrictions. However, itwould seem this sword had been imbued with some sort of magic which waivedthat restriction.“Interesting.”After swinging it several times, Ainz casually poked his hand with it.There was no pain. It would seem Ainz’s immunity to attacks below level 60was still in effect. It did not have the special magic that was imbued intoGazef’s sword.

[V11]

Now Ziggy and others used to assume it being so strong and dealing with class restrictions was evidence enough to claim it was a YGGDRASIL item. However, Keno's talent proves native magic can ignore class requirements for whatever reason and simulate effects by some unknown mechanism like martial arts copying magic enchantments(V1) or elements (V7) or elemental properties with no mana.

The fact the Dwarven sword is runeless and Ainz didn't find a trace of anything remotely as strong, that is still pretty mediocre by YGGDRASIL standards calls into question that notion however. Shouldn't there had been YGGDRASIL coins, or even some garbage tier YGGDRASIL gear of other metals or something? But no mention is given.

Naturally, the McMuffin excuse here is it's just a wild magic item. However, seeing as undead can't normally use Wild Magic (unless supplanting that cost from elsewhere) then wouldn't a Wild Magic fail to draw lifeforce from Momonga, an undead? And why would a Wild Magic sword operate on tier magic's mana when for all we know that may not have even existed in the past? Also he saw it as magical unlike the wild magic ring, a clear contradiction in our belief something is strange about Wild Magic items. ? There's plausible deniability at least from either angle.

That's right sheeple, the era of McMuffin's is over, now we're in the era of Schrodinger's Mcgriddles!  Is it a YGGDRASIL item? Wild magic item(McMuffin)? Or bullshit no one knows how to even explain it's creation(McGriddle)!?

McMuffin - Wild Magic Items

McGriddle - New World Artifact

Back to the Poison great sword. The question remains though: where the hell did this come from? There shouldn't have been any skilled magic enchanters in the forest seeing as even the Lizardmen with tribal casters can't really create magic items well or in broad utility. Was it a Dark Elf magic item? Or the fact it draws on energy of some sort mean its using dragon lord principles of casting from something other than mana or it's own reserves?

The question in particular is:

Is it a Dark Elf item(as they once lived in Tob)?

Is it a Wild magic item?

Or is it a New World Artifact?

We know the bone armor stole power from it's user, but it didn't seem to actually require this power to sustain it's buff. IE it saps your intelligence but it is permanently gone when you take it off and put it back on. Nothing the Poison Greatsword is doing seems permanent as it was safe for Guu and Jugem to use. RazorEdge likewise didn't seem to draw power from the host to any great extent to fuel it's effect, yet the Dwarven sword did if only temporarily.

Wild Magic items are a better possibility. We can confirm it draws from the power of it's host to use its effects to an extent but it's nothing permanently lost unless you are like Cure Elim. Still though it seems wild magic can typically only draw power from living beings, seeing how undead lose wild magic power normally. Reframing our perspective: these effects are strong but also temporary to match their potency.

Climb nodded his head vigorously, and activated his ring’s power. This ring, made by the Dragon Lords using Wild Magic, contained a spell that could temporarily increase a warrior’s strength.

[V6]

Pay attention to that: it's a temporary boost. Seeing as Draudillion can use wild magic but needs external fuel sources due to her own weakness, it's possible wild magic effects require fuel sources in general, thus why these items only allow temporary effects instead of constantly on ones. It's got stricter activation requirements and fuel efficiency but can surpass them in scope, theoretically.

Seeing as no one casts abilities like Wild Magic casters, it would be understandable that few understand what these magic items are doing. It's not using focus or mana at least as anyone would normally understand it. The Great Sword proccing only on weaklings the same as the Death Knight's Squire Zombie ability or Ainz's Create Undead further connects it to Level and the Soul as it's clearly acting on something related to power and beings.

The commonality in all these abilities are they operate on beings weaker than you ie no resistance possible basically. It's at least half as strong as the ability in question or somewhat less. Ainz can only create undead less than half as strong as he is, the same for Squire zombies, so there is some basis of this operating on relative strength.

These abilities come from YGGDRASIL but they do to have also been changed in this world as Squire Zombies can create zombies with no upper limit now just as Cure Elim seemed to be able to do and Ainz can with Create Undead.

We need to notate this as some YGGDRASIl abilities do still have upper limits. In particular Squire Zombies are limited in creation as are Shalltear's number of thralls.

Now then, there are all sorts of national threat typemonsters ye t Ido not think people grasp why so here is more detail. There is a reason that Death Knights can threaten a country, which is that those killed by a Death Knight become a squire zombie. This is quite strong. These zombies are half the Death Knight’s level. However, do Level 1 citizens become undead of such power?Isn’t that a problem?Oh, the number of squire zombies that can be made at a given time has a limit,
but...The problem is that those killed by the squire zombies become regular zom-bies.These zombies have no upper limit!

[AT]

There will be several vampires before very long. Shalltear plans to havea harem. That actually has a fairly simple explanation, it’s basically Level divided by 10 is the number she can make and the ability cannot be in-creased.

[Arcadia]

To summarize we have two attributes here:

Relative Level Proccing(Poison sword, Create Undead, Squire Zombies)

Limitless Creation (Cure Elim's wild magic, Squire Zombie Zombie Creation, Create Undead)

We can confirm that wild magic can do the same exact feat as these two Level Proccing ones, but we can't say if it's based on relative level or not given how weak people are. Still it still worked on hero tier people and that is a differential of about 60 levels similar to Ainz's own difference to his Create Undead limit. Of particular note is Keno's father actually did partially resist the effect but not completely. IE he was actually walking around a bit compared to nearly everyone else. Could just be because he's a warrior and caster but seeing as people were dying off based on total level and not say build (none of the warriors in the palace were noted to outlast him either) the evidence leans more toward it's based on total level.

Ainz turned his gaze to the demihuman position.Half of it had already been destroyed, and Soul Eaters were walking lazilyamong the fleeing demihumans. Even that much was enough to send thedemihumans collapsing in droves from their instant death auras. The SoulEaters who consumed their souls became stronger in turn. When Soul Eaters appeared inYggdrasil, they were almost always level-appropriate encounters, so the chances of a player being downed by an instantdeath effect would only be one in a hundred or less. That was why this specialability of Soul Eaters rarely got the chance to see use. However, it was different this time. This was the perfect opportunity toshow it off.“Souls, huh... oh no. I should have experimented with this.

...

Undead created with corpses did not vanish with the passage of time. Butwhy did they not vanish? If it’s not because they’re using the corpse as a medium, but the soul, does it meanthat Soul Eaters which have eaten souls won’t vanish? ...Well, even if I found theanswer I wouldn’t know where to apply it. Still, knowing is better than not knowing.

[V13]

Just as Raise Dead drains life force(NW) = levels(YGGDRASIL), what's going on here seems related to why people confuse the two. Why not just call it strength or power? Or why not call powerful people 'brimming with life' or some shit? People in the New World aren't stupid. They understand certain people are stronger than others. Rather, Ziggy questions if maybe it's the readers at large and Ainz who have misunderstood a core mechanic of this New World.

What's strange is why they only treat this as life force when talking about level loss, if we read things at face value.

There was a resurrection spell in the fifth tier of divine magic, but that spellcould not resurrect his mother. Resurrection expended a tremendous amountof life force on the part of the dead person, and the deceased who lackedsufficient life force would not be resurrected, but reduced to ash and dust. Hismother did not have the necessary vitality.

[V2]

The spell Lakyus cast was the 5th-tier spell Raise Dead. The process of resurrection drained tremendous amounts of life force. Iron-ranked adventurers and below would be reduced to ash without fail if it was cast onthem. Adamantite-ranked adventurers could be revived without a problem, but the resurrection would drain so much life energy from them that they would not be able to move, and recovering this life energy would take a long time

[V6]

“That is a fact. Among the 5th-tier divine spells, the resurrection magic Raise Dead consumes vast quantities of life force. Perhaps higher-tiered resurrection spells might reduce the amount of life force that is lost... but nobody can use those, so that is merely academic. Then again, I have heard that the DragonLords and their ancient magic could return the dead to life without the loss ofany life force

[V9]

This isn't bullshit either. People really are weak and can barely move after resurrection. That didnt' appear normal to Ainz when it happened either. Zaryusu and Neia were both very feeble upon coming back. Yet Zaryusu who should of lost more life force than Neia due to undergoing a weaker tier spell somehow could move around more and speak clearer. That's strange if we assume Lifeforce = level loss.

After that, someone pulled him up forcefully, dragging him into a brilliantlywhite world. He felt powerless. He felt like his innards were a sack of mud.He felt incredibly tired. Even intense physical activity had never left him thisexhausted before.Zaryusu struggled to open his heavy-lidded eye

...

Zaryusu worked his mouth, which felt numb and thus hard to control, andthen asked a question.Yet the answer he received was a baffled look on Crusch’s face. As he saw it,Zaryusu breathed a sigh of relief, because he knew that Crusch was not dead. Inthat case, why was he still alive? The voice from beside him supplied a hint.“Hm... he seems to have come back to life, but his thoughts still seemmuddled, and he seems to have lost levels... That being the case, it ought to beroughly the same as it was inYggdrasil.

...

Zaryusu did not know this, but that wand was a Wand of Resurrection, amagic item which had recalled Zaryusu to life. Under normal circumstances, those who could not use clerical magic would not be able to use magic itemsimbued with cleric-type spells, but magic items of this type were an exceptionto that rule.

...

“What’s wrong? I doubt the Lizardmen despise resurrection, do they? Orhave you forgotten how to speak?”“Ruh-resurrection... you... you can bring the dead back to life...?”“Exactly. What, you thought I could not raise the dead?”“Was... was there a great ceremony of revival?”“Great ceremony? What is that? I am more than sufficient for the task bymyself.”

....

“Come to think of it, you seem to have trouble speaking. After some rest, you ought to get used to it. For now, take time to recover. There are manythings which need to be decided, and the most important thing is how to takecare of this village... You may contact Cocytus about matters regarding that.”

[V4]

It was the Sorcerer King Ainz Ooal Gown.“Yhour... Mhajeshty...”Neia reflexively reached up to him, like a worried child reaching for herparents“Neia Baraja. Do not force yourself to move. Let me take care of this placeand rest.”

...

Neia did not question the Sorcerer King even as he poured that poisonous-looking potion on her. What the Sorcerer King did must surely be correct.Reality turned out as she had imagined it. The purple potion that he pouredon Neia’s body instantly healed all of her wounds. It would seem the SorcerousKingdom’s potions were of a different color.“While it seems a full recovery will be a long way off, you should recoveryour energy before that what a pain. Tch. The militiamen are all dead...looks like there’s a few left over there. In that case...”

...

As he spoke, he took out another potion. It was completely different fromthe one just now, being stored in a beautiful, slender phial. While she had noidea what the potion inside it could do, it looked like it must be a very valuableitem.“I, ahm fhine, Yhour Mhajeshty...”“...Enough of that. I’m sorry I was late in saving you.”The Sorcerer King shielded the upper halves of his eye sockets like he wasbeing dazzled as he poured out the contents of the bottle. The sense ofweakness she had been feeling since just now melted away. However, her bodystill felt heavy. She felt like something had been scraped away from herself, butmatching it no, exceeding it was a warmth in the core of her body. She could get up like this. While her body still hurt so much that her tearshad leaked out, she could not remain in such a disgraceful posture in front ofthe person who had come to save her.“Stop Miss Baraja. There’s no need to force yourself to stand.”

[V13]

If Levels = Lifeforce, then how do you explain this difference? Is it based on proportion of your levels lost then? IE Neia losing 40 percent of her levels but Zaryusu losing at most 25 percent?  Even lakyus said Adamantites cannot normally recover easily however and ove around. Clearly an aAdamantite would lose a smaller proprotion of hteir life. It'ss still possible it's just a combination of tier and overall level too.

This may not be abundantly clear to you all (it wasn't to Ziggy at first either because Ziggy is a baka at least) but actually lifeforce drain IS real. It's not just levels either(or atleast Ziggy will attempt to persuade you it is).

Theoretically higher resurrection spells should lead to less lifeforce drain as they don't cost as many levels. But pay attention. Zaryusu was brought back by a Wand of Resurrection, a 7th Tier spell. Neia was brought back by a wand with True Resurrection, a 9th Tier spell. Yet look how feeble Neia was coming back yet Zaryusu could somewhat move. Now we could assume this was due to level loss, but that makes no sense as Neia should have lost less levels than Zaryusu. So then does lifeforce only mean total level? This contradicts the idea that resurrection spells drain life force (levels) if we don't think more on it.

Neia had died because he helped Remedios and was thus delayed in going toNeia’s side. He had to use a high level wand to resurrect Neia, because he wasnot sure how high level Neia was, and he was afraid of her turning to ash likethe Lizardman from back then.In truth, he had no idea whether the price of resurrecting Neia was justifiedby the benefits she could bring to Ainz and Nazarick. That said, since the planto help Remedios and indebt her to him had been a complete failure, he oughtto at least try again with Neia, which was why he had chosen to resurrect her.However...Would a Wand of Resurrection a seventh tier spell have been fine as well?...It seems I was being too generous. Also, it’ll take an hour before I can swap out thisring.Ainz was looking at one of his eight rings, the one on his right thumb. It was the Ring of Wand Mastery.Said ring was an ultra-rare artifact dropped by a boss.Normally, only magic casters of the appropriate tradition would be able touse the spells stored within a wand. For instance, only a divine caster could usea wand imbued with the first tier divine spellLight Healing. If they could beused by magic casters of other traditions, then they would be staves, whichwere more expensive. That said, a patch had updated certain wands so they could be used by allplayers. Unfortunately, the wand imbued with the ninth tier spellTrueResurrectionthat he had used to resurrect Neia was not one of them, and Ainzwould not be able to use it under normal circumstances

[V13]

Notice something strange though? Neia despite losing levels came became less feeble after being exposed to Nfirea's Viagra. If lifeforce = levels, how do you explain a potion remedying it even if not completely? Unless you want to argue Viagra now gives you levels temproarly or something?

Umu. I am glad you came, Miss Baraja. But there is no need to fulfill yoursquire’s obligations today. While your wounds might have healed, the fatigue ofthe battle mustAh, it’s been taken care of,Ainz thought. The potion he had used back then wasone which removed both fatigue and exhaustion. It was a potion that Nfirea his skin dry and rough had praised to the heavens.

[V13]

If Lifeforce is level loss caused all the symptoms we see it can't explain why Neia's symptoms were worse and could recover from a simple potion. As it stands, normally this power does return with time and the potion just addresses it right away.

Adamantite-ranked adventurers could be revived without a problem, but the resurrection would drain so much life energy from them that they would not be able to move, and recovering this life energy would take a long time

[V6]

I remember something about it feeling very good, so he was asked to do it a lot oftimes... could it be that the reason he made so much of that potion some kind ofnutrient supplement, I think and then gave it to me was because...In any case, he had decided to give it to those two Lizardmen so they wouldwork hard on making more rare children.

[V13]

So Fantasy Viagra gives you a boner and fixes Death Jet Lag?

Climb is another example we can look toward:

Something should have happened, but everything felt like it had withered away. He felt something akin to the feeling of forgetting a dream in the morning.Climb felt like his muscles and bones had melted as he could not summon any strength at all. Even the simple act of twisting his neck was a struggle

...

Aaaa...He tried to call out to them, but the sounds that came out of him could not constitute speech. Still, the person in the room had understood him as they hurriedly rushed over.

He still could not vocalize, but that was to be expected. His entire body was without strength, so not even his vocal cords could move.

...

Climb struggled against his immobile body to nod his head.

[V14]

It even comes up you can shorten the recovery window.

The Fallen Seed I gave you before, this is another one of them. The next step would be to prepare the sacrifice. You may start after he recovers. While magic could speed up the recovery, based on your specifications we will not do such a thing.

[V14]

Anyway...

A long, long time ago, Ziggy used to think Resurrection spell success was related to age. Really. ....Don't laught at me imaginary voice in my head.

"Kek."

 REEEEEEE

That belief mainly sprung up from:

And the king was still anordinary person, so he would probably die if struck by some magic. Even if resurrection spells could be used on him, the king would surely be unable tobear the life force drain it would cause

[V6]

Most people interpreted this as "even if his body wasn't fucked up beyond repair his level was probably too low". Ziggy interpreted it as "even if his level was high enough, he was too damn old".

Curious ain't it? Ziggy's a senile old dinosaur....

If lifeforce drain isn't related to just levels then doesn't that mean this old idea may have new merit upon re-examination?

Resurrection expended a tremendous amountof life force on the part of the dead person, and the deceased who lackedsufficient life force would not be resurrected, but reduced to ash and dust. Hismother did not have the necessary vitality.

[V2]

Now this line suggests lifeforce has to be level otherwise it seems strange. Unless we consider the fact resurrection can fail due to the body's state. Similarly, a Raise Dead user makes a distinctoin between vitality and strength that matches what we see in how life force and level are behaving differently compared to recovery using just a potion.

“Also, it’s the same with us. Two of us were killed in combat with Jaldabaothand while they were resurrected from the dead, they still have not regainedtheir full strength yet. If we invade Jaldabaoth’s territory in this state, wemight all end up being killed.”

[V12]

“...As for resurrecting the Holy Queen-sama... can it be done? After all, oncewe can get that settled, everything else will be moot.”“Unfortunately, according to what we learned from Blue Rose, even that fifthtier spell will have a hard time working without a corpse, or if it’s badly-damaged.

[V12]

The Holy Queen isdead, but perhaps Your Majesty could do something about it?”“What do you want me to do about it?”Resurrection.”“I see. That is not impossible.”He said so in such a casual tone that Neia doubted her ears for a moment.Resurrection magic could be considered the ultimate secret of divine magic.Very few humans could use it. How many people in this world could speakthose words so easily?“Naturally, I will expect some form of compensation for this. Then where isthe body? In what state is it?”“The body’s location is currently unknown, as is its status. On the subject ofcompensation, we will gladly pay as much money as Your Majesty desires.”The Sorcerer King waved his hand before his face. The lack of a body will make things very difficult. Even with one, damage tothe body might complicate matters. Without an intact corpse, there is a chancethat if I used resurrection magic, it might become one of the undead.

[V12]

Ziggy's point for this tangent is: aren't their abilities and items that draw on energy? So can't lifeforce be more than levels but also this power dwelling in people that makes you tired when expending or losing it in resurrection spells? Or at least somethign else? Clearly not everyone uses the words interchangably. We already have precedent with Wild Magic being normally unsuable if a Dragonlord is undead. If lifeforce was purely just levels, it would not explain why Soulbreaker works on undead but wild magic is not usable by undead dragonlords. If undead have souls and wild magic is powered by souls, why can't undead dragon lords normally use wild magic?

Cure Elim exploited a loophole using its wild magic to absorb a great number of souls from the surrounding area and using the stolen souls to compensate for the limitations of the undead transformation, thus giving the undead Dragon the ability to use wild magic. ....Therefore once it consumed all of the souls in tis collection, it would be reduced to a mindless Zombie Dragon.

[SS]

Usually losing the soul is the same as being a mindless undead, but Night Liches clearly have souls still.

Similarly, Tsa's Platinum armor is a construct an unliving thing that is drawing power from itself (HP) to fuel wild magic but Cure Elim's wild magic was drawing from something that wasn't his own HP. And as far as Draudillion knows, she needs to kill people to use souls for her own talent variant of wild magic. All of these beings have HP but in totality lifeforce can't just be levels or HP if we take all these occurrences together. So where do we draw the line between souls and lifeforce?

She had the title of Dragon Lord, but her combat power was only that of a regular person. While the Theocracy classified her as a true Dragon Lord, that was simply due to her inborn talents, and so some people used the very rare title of True False Dragon Lord to describe her. That was because the quality which determined her truth or falsehood was whether or not she could use Wild Magic

....

“The magic of the soul, huh…” Wild Magic was different from normal magic. It was magic that used souls. Therefore, if she sacrificed many of her people and then destroyed the souls which were produced, she could cast a powerful spell. Her great-grandfather the Dragon Lord had told her about the great explosion which was the Platinum Dragon Lord’s ultimate attack. In all likelihood, she could imitate it easily. However, since she was much weaker than a Dragon Lord, she would have to sacrifice over a million people to cast a spell like that.

[V9]

He had to use a high level wand to resurrect Neia, because he wasnot sure how high level Neia was, and he was afraid of her turning to ash likethe Lizardman from back then.

[V13]

Cure Elim turned, and then it spoke in a voice that was surprisingly calm, but which was laced with undertones of a blazing inferno.“One more time, I can only use this one more time.”It was a lie.Suzuki Satoru scoffed at Cure Elim’s words. Where could one find an enemy who would reveal their weaknesses

Suzuki Satoru’s eyes went wide.A wall of bones suddenly appeared in front of Cure Elim, intercepting the [Reality Slash]. Behind the wall of bones that had been rent by the [Reality Slash] was Cure Elim, whose torso was coiled in preparation to lunge. It had never used tier-based spells until now. Did it still have the strength to fight?Suzuki Satoru began to panic. His opponent’s health was almost gone, but its mana was still full.

...

As it tore at the Elemental’s throat, Cure Elim locked its hate-twisted crimson eyes on Suzuki Satoru’sCure Elim was almost out of stamina. That big, beautiful HP bar was now nearly depleted, like a candle in the wind

[SS]

The death caused by this magic also results in the permament destruction of the soul,---Usually after dying after becoming undead in other words -- a Dragonlord can no longer use Wild Magic. But Cure Elim exploited a loophole, using its Wild Magic to absorb a great number of souls from the surrounding area and using the stolen souls to compensate for the limitatons of the undead transformation, thus giving the undead Dragon the ability to use Wild magic.

...

every time it casts it utterly destroys a fixed number of souls. Therefore, once it consumed all of the souls in its collection, it would be reduced to a mindless Zombie Dragon.

[SS]

Because Soulbreaker works on the Night Liches, we can confirm intelligent  Undead at least do indeed have souls. Given Cure Elim becomes mindless once he runs out of souls and all his victims who lost their souls are mindless zombies.... unintelligent undead may have no souls? This seems to link sapience and souls to some extent.

Having made up its mind, Cure Elim used its most powerful attack. While it had been ineffective against its most hated enemy, there was no way it would not work against the undead before it.Therefore— Cure Elim fired the huge black beam from its mouthThe members of “Corpus of the Abyss” who had been forced into the battle had been annihilated. Even the Primal Air Elemental that was airborne to ward against Cure Elim taking flight had met the same fate.Naturally, Suzuki Satoru had been attacked as well. However, it had no effect on him because of the protection of his World Class Item.

[SS]

Based on Satoru not making a connection between Soulbreaker and HP, as well as pondering if Cure Elim really had one more use left suggest despite watching his HP Satoru didn'dt notice a drop by using that wild magic spell that should of been massive. For example if he had seen Cure Elim lose HP each time he wouldn't have mocked Cure Elim for not using Soulbreaker at the very end and holding back as he should of realized that his HP was too low if it was HP dependent.

As Cure Elim gnawed at its neck, it raked wildly with its sharp foreclaws. As expected of a high-tiered elemental, it still had vitality left over even after being attacked by a Dragon that was stronger than itself.Ahhh, what an idiot. You had one more shot, so you should have used it.As it tore at the Elemental’s throat, Cure Elim locked its hate-twisted crimson eyes on Suzuki Satoru’sCure Elim was almost out of stamina. That big, beautiful HP bar was now nearly depleted, like a candle in the wind.

[SS]

That confirms even if intelligent undead lack lifeforce they do have souls and as a result sapience.

The death caused by this magic [soulbreaker] also results in the permament destruction of the soul

[SS]

So Dragonlords have SOMETHING that they lose upon becoming undead related to wild magic. Cure Elim absorbed the souls of others to continue to be able to use wild magic but if he runs out of it he becomes a mindless undead. As Satoru was monitoring HP and MP undead Dragon lords store it in something else. This is in contrast with Riku, a Wild Magic construct whose Wild Magic fuel and HP are connected instead.

It's important to note he doesn't die if he uses up his wild magic fuel either, Cure Elim would still exist corporeally and be capable of autonomous action, ie he still has HP. Just he's no longer able of rational thought and wild magic casting at that point.

Let's look at Tsa - his armor draws his wild magic fuel from his suit's own health pool (whatever that may actually be). We already know that living creatures, unliving creatures, and constructs can be animated by different forces (positive energy, negative energy, and mana) that are all deemed 'HP'. As undead HP is an instance of negative energy, we can say Wild Magic fuel is mutually exclusive with or independent of negative energy HP. For RIku the animating force(HP) also happens to be Wild Magic fuel.  Several accounts corraborate that wild magic fuel is souls. What we need to deduce is why two non living creatures are harnessing it differently.

a

He returned the scissors to her, and while still holding the lock of Keno’s hair, he cast the offensive spell [Ray of Negative Energy]. While negative energy damaged the living, it would heal the undead instead.

[SS]

As an aside, moving Zombies would not rot or harbor maggots because they were animated by negative energy. However, the loss of negative energy once they were defeated meant that they would rot as normal, flies could lay eggs in them, and small animals would gnaw on them.

[SS]

[Negative Burst]Black rays of unholy light began pulsing from Ainz as the spell quickly swallowed up its surroundings. The DoomLord healed upon receiving the negative energy, but it wasnot the most mana-efficient way to heal. On the other hand, Riku did not take damage from the spell at all.For him to have taken zero damage, was it because he had immunity to negative energy? Was it a racial trait? Or was it a job trait? Or perhaps, the most likely explanation, was that it had something to do with his equipment.

One could call the blows that they were exchanging a back-and-forth, but the simplicity in Rikus fighting style was quite worrying.Ainz knew exactly why the Doom Lord could not gain the upper hand. None of its skills, negative energy attacks, or spiritual attacks had any effects against Riku.At this point, it was all but confirmed that Riku was of a race that had similar properties as Golems or other Constructs

[V14]

We cannot conclude that wild magic fuel would lead to HP loss in a living Dragon Lord casting it. Our basis is a construct like Riku, the Platinum armor, shouldn't have positive energy or living HP. If Undead Dragon Lords can store negative energy or HP in addition to Wild Magic fuel, and a non living creature's HP is wild magic fuel, there is evidence for living Dragon Lords drawing from HP or some other non HP  source.

In particular you cannot claim Lifeforce and HP are the same thing.

The Sorcerer King reached into the sleeve of his robe and, after a brief delay,he withdrew a purple, poisonous-looking potion. Normally, potions were blue.Neia did not question the Sorcerer King even as he poured that poisonous-looking potion on her. What the Sorcerer King did must surely be correct.Reality turned out as she had imagined it. The purple potion that he pouredon Neia’s body instantly healed all of her wounds. It would seem the SorcerousKingdom’s potions were of a different color.“While it seems a full recovery will be a long way off, you should recoveryour energy before that

[V13]

The Sorcerer King shielded the upper halves of his eye sockets like he wasbeing dazzled as he poured out the contents of the bottle. The sense ofweakness she had been feeling since just now melted away. However, her bodystill felt heavy. She felt like something had been scraped away from herself, butmatching it no, exceeding it was a warmth in the core of her body. She could get up like this. While her body still hurt so much that her tearshad leaked out, she could not remain in such a disgraceful posture in front ofthe person who had come to save her.

 [V13]

Notice how Neia's body was still in pain despite receiving a healing potion and a some sort of stamina potion. Whatever this pain is, it is unrelated to positive energy or animating HP of the living and a lack of stamina from over exertion. We can infer this as a healing potion could not stop it nor can stamina.

Seeing as this is related to non bodily pain, whatever this pain is could be related to why the people of Invern expereinced unfathomable amounts of pain as their souls were ripped out(to be absorbed by another).

—Suddenly, Keno felt something. It was difficult to describe that sensation in words. However, it was more powerful than her mother, like a great wave, something that defied description. This was a sensation she had never experienced before, and Keno could not help opening her eyes. She saw her mother, who was surprised by her daughter suddenly opening her eyes. And at that moment—Pain stabbed into Keno.It was an agony she had never experienced before, which made no sense to her.Keno collapsed to the ground amidst the pain, as though something had been ripped out of her.It hurt so much that she could not speak. Keno could not believe anything could hurt this much in the world. She wept tears of pain. In her tear-dimmed vision, she could see the two maids collapsed on the ground as well, their faces distorted from pain and agony. Beside her, her mother was going through the same thing as well.

[SS]

“Spi...rit? Or flesh? [Undead Form].” As an advanced version of [Mind of Undeath], this spell could briefly grant its target various properties of the undead, both beneficial and baneful. This spell now took effect on Keno, but even so, it did not help with her pain.

[SS]

Recall Mind of Undeath's effects:

Then, perhaps by using an enchantment-type spell, she could force him tolower his defenses and win the encounter in one stroke—Charm Person.”Mind of Undeath.”

Narberal and Khazit cast their spells at the same time. Narberal directed aspell which would charm humans at Khazit, while Khazit cast a defensive spellon himself which protected him from mind-affecting spell

[V2]

The precedent of soul agony overwriting or rather overpoweringany physical agony is already established as well. That is, corporeal pain is lower in magnitude to soul based pain.

Her mother bit her lip bright red blood immediately spurted out and grabbed Keno’s arm. Surely Keno would have moaned from the pain since her mother had used too much force. But the full-body agonies she was experiencing were too strong and Keno did not feel the pain in her arm at all.

[SS]

This makes more sense if we consider that even if your lifeforce or soul is being drained, something else in the body is being lost as you are still able to remain cognizant.

His body no longer responded to him, and he could feel his body heatdropping slowly, like a slow poison spreading through him. Even breathing wasdifficult. Only his mind remained sharp under these circumstances. He could not die yet.

[V4]

In addition, Soulbreaker Breth seems to operate on some third axis of reality, as it ignores physical matter and even tier mana based constructs. This supports the notion souls or wild magic fuel are related to incorporeal aspects of the world beyond just one alignment of animating energy (positive, negative, or another). Naturally this supports Cure Elim's situation: being a negative energy being able to store souls (Wild Magic fuel) somehow in addition to the energy animating his body. We reach a contradiction if we assume the ripped out souls are just lifeforce as in positive energy at least as it shouldn't be possible to store both in one vessel as they are mutually opposed (negative energy hurts positive energy beings and vice versa). Similarly, if lifeforce was just souls Soulbreaker shouldn't work on undead. However, this does not rule out Wild Magic fuel is something else also considered lifeforce.

Indeed, as long as the negative energy which served as their life force wasnot depleted, the undead would keep fighting. As long as the conditions forinstant death were not met — decapitation was quite a common one for mostlow tier undead beings — they would not lose the will to fight like humanswould. In other words, the undead were perfect soldiers.

[V4]

Agony surged through Zaryusu’s body, and he cried out in pain. That was because he was being infused with negative energy, which ate awayat his life force. Zaryusu was trained to withstand pain, but he could not bearthe terrible anguish that turned his veins to ice.“Die, you damned Lizardman!”Igva’s face began to crumble, and the fragments disintegrated in mid-air.Igva’s life was fading away, but his loyalty to his master kept him clinging tothis side of the line between life and death.Zaryusu tried to resist it, but fear filled him as he realized his body no longerresponded to commands. He too was on the verge of death. Igva’s negative energy infusion wassnuffing out the last of his life force.Zaryusu’s vision wavered and turned cloudy.

[V4]

“Longin— [Wall of Skeleton]!” At the same time, the staff cast [Veil of Moon]. Both defenses deployed before him at the same time. It was a double-layered

defense, composed of a physical barrier and an immaterial magical barrier

In fact, the black beam had easily pierced the barriers — as though they were not thereand swallowed up everything.

[SS]

the two walls vanished as though they had melted away into the air.The magic caster who had driven Cure Elim to its wit’s end stood calmly in front of it. Beside it was a floating staff. While it had no reason to doubt its own senses, its opposition had not been hurt in any way.Walls like those could not stop the Soulbreaker Breath. That being the case, how had its opponent done this?

[SS]

Thus, mental counter measures, physical impediments, and even magical impediments dont 'seem to be able to stop soul-based attacks at least.

Yet, both Negative Energy and Soul Extracting cause great deals of pain in the victim that interfere with motor control.

Whatever this vector of attack, and whatever lifeforce is, positive energy healing can't treat it, mental defenses can't stop it, and you lose an aspect of it when you are undead but it does not make you immune to it. Similarly, negative energy eats away at lifeforce so they shouldn't normally coexist in the same body.

Whatever the soul is, we have precedent that it is a source of power in addition to whatever lifeforce is. Negative energy can sap one but not the other. The soul thus can theoretically coexist with negative energy unlike lifeforce.

The semi-conscious Zaryusu howled, drawing a cry of surprise from Igva.Zaryusu’s eyeballs swiveled and locked onto Igva. His eyes were clouded, butit was hard to believe that he was not looking directly at him with a smolderingintensity. The sight made Igva freeze up.“Crusch! Zenberu! Rororo!”“—! What are you trying to do—!? Just die—!”Where had he gotten that vitality from? The massive surge of negativeenergy pouring into him should have been steadily dissolving and consumingZaryusu’s life force. And indeed, Zaryusu’s limbs felt heavy, and his bodyseemed frozen.Even so, every time he cried their names, Zaryusu felt a flicker of warmthwithin him. This warmth did not come from his life force.Instead, it sprang from a place within his chest — the heart.

\[V4]

That should be pretty obvious given Soulbreaker works on Night liches.

Lifeforce - Animates living bodies; lost on resurrection; fuels abilities

Negative Energy - Anti Lifeforce; animates undead; fuels abilities

Soul  - Neutral to both

"....So is there any connection at all to your lifespan and life force head canon Ziggy?"

Hmmmmmmmm. There doesn't seem to be anything explicit. There are general ideas like aging affects one's ability to heal. In Overlrod's case we know people past their prime do in fact get weaker.

Parpatra was an old man who was in his 80th year of life.Usually, people in this line of work retired after the age of 45. There werealso some who would retire in their early forties. Very few people remained asadventurers after the age of 50. The people who worked such a cruel job wheredeath was a very real danger could not ignore the effects of age withering theirbodies.

In truth, Parpatra was an exception, but his strength had deterioratedgreatly from when he was in his prime — apparently, when he had reached thelevel of the orichalcum-ranked. Even so, Parpatra refused to step down fromthe frontlines.

[V7]

Her head of white hair showed how long she had lived. However, her faceoverflowed with a childish vibrancy on her face which did not match her years.Age might have made her skinny and weak, but it had not changed her heart.

[V7]

Raven pointed to a group of five men standing together.Although they were all well into their middle age, and their strength was notwhat it used to be, they had been orichalcum-ranked adventurers in theirprime, and there was something about the way they carried themselves thatmade Gazef feel that he could not take them lightly.

[V9]

First was the core of the Noble Faction, Marquis Boullope, who controlledthe most territory among the Great Nobles. His face was heavily scarred, a lordwho looked like a warrior. As he was already in his fifties, his once-stout body which had been perfectedthrough unrelenting training was little more than a memory of the past, but hisvoice and predator’s gaze made people think that there must have been morethan a little bit of his warrior-self left in him.Although he as a warrior had lost much of his strength to age, as acommander, he was a better commander than even Gazef, which made him justas indispensable to the Kingdom as the Warrior-Captain

[V9]

The Black Scripture was commonly assigned to very dangerous tasks, and sothey had a very high attrition rate. However, as long as the corpses remained, they could be brought back to life. The problem was that resurrections draineda person’s life force, and one would need to train for a long time to recover thestrength they had before death. Thus, some people chose to retire instead. There were also others who had retired due to their age, but no matter thereason, any retirees had priority on whatever post they wanted. While therewere those who were content to live a degenerate, jobless lifestyle, there werevery few of those. Most of them would not be able to bear the repeated looksfrom their wives and questions like “Daaaad, why haven’t you found a jobyet—?” and thus they returned to work.It would take a while to refamiliarize these people with the feel of actualcombat, and there were those older ones who could not perform as they had intheir prime due to age. Still, they were more reliable than most others.

[V10]

HOWEVER.

There does seem to be an implicit factor. That is, longer lived races seem to be more magically inclined at a fundamental level ignoring affinities and aptitude for a moment(class based evolution). Magically inclined in this case referes to innate magic like innate tier magic or inate racial abilities. Seeing as dragons are heteromorphs, have dragon breath, and learn innate spells they are an extreme on the scale. Humanity lies on the lower end as they don't have any magically bestowed senses or spells.

Dwarves and Elves lie in the middle somewhere, having more magical senses and longer lifespans than humanity, measuring up until at least the centuries. Magelos are a good example of a demihuman's lifespan beign longer too while also being innate casters. This connection may be tenuous but there is undoubtedly a correlation . Unfortunately the sample size is small for non humans.

It's also implied that innate casters who use Tier magic or possess strange racial abilities  despite not being dedicated casters do live long lives in comparison to humanity at least.

Insert "Correlation is not causation though Ziggy"

Here is Ziggy's logic:

In this world magic used to be based on lifeforce

That creates a connection between life and magical ability.

Thus racial abilities and innate tier magic can be signs of a creatures with a higher quality or quantity of lifeforce

The reason is longer lived creatures tend to have more of these types of abilties.

Undead in contrast just don't age, magically inclined or not. Still if we are operating on the maxim that lifeforce is connected between longevity and various racial or creature abilities, then undead losing some but gaining others  like vampire eyes or the ability to cast tier magic in Cure Elim's case doesn't outright contradict the notion. These ageless beings are more magical than a mundane creature at least. The force is different but the general ideas is still sound.

the undead did not age, so they wouldcontinue ruling the land for all eternity until it was defeated.

[V10]

There was an ability known as danger sensing.Among adventurers, thieves and those with sensory skills prized that ability. As the name implied, it allowed its user to sense danger. There were two main variations of this ability. One kind disregarded logicand analysis, making snap decisions based on one’s perceptions. The other wasthe product of experienced reasoning and deduction. The proverbial sixthsense and intuition belonged to the first category, while those who picked upon minute sensory traces and observed changes in the environment fell intothe latter category. One would naturally learn the second type when on the battlefield or whentraveling alone, even if one did not go out of the way to hone it. It was a formof experience gained from being in hazardous environments. The Lizardmen were superior to humans in that aspect. This was becausetheir biological abilities — their senses — were sharper, and because they livedin more hostile conditions. A human being would typically live in a safe placethat was far away from monsters, but Lizardmen often had monsters asneighbors

[V4]

Hamusuke

Charm Person is a spell for humans, but there are spells to charm nonhumanspecies as well; for example, one effective use is charming horses so they buckoff their knights. The Wise King of the Forest (AKA Hamsuke) has the spellCharm Species that works on any species.Thisisatangent, butCharm Speciesisa 4thTierspell. Thething is, Hamsuke’slevel as a wizard is practically zero, so it’s not very hard to resist. Hamsuke pri-marily used it for hunting prey in the forest. In other words, normal animalsjust have low mental resistance.

[Manga]

“...The Wise King of the Forest? What manner of beast is that?”Climb recalled the name from various heroic sagas and similar stories. However, it would be terribly rude to interrupt right now.I don’t know the details either, but apparently it was a magical beast whichinhabited the Great Forest of Tob since times of old. It possesses matchlessmight. My colleagues once... yes, I don’t think they encountered it when theywent to the Great Forest 200 years ago.”Evileye shrugged as she mentioned the figure of 200.Such a number would not be anything out of the ordinary for Forest Elves, but given her attitude, Climb could only conclude that it was a jest of somesort.

[V5]

Elves hadkeener hearing than human beings.

[V7]

“That’s not true! Well, it’s true that I don’t have the talent to be a properrunesmith. But my father, and my father’s father — my grandfather — wereboth the top runesmiths of this country, and they served the last royal — the

Runesmith King — as his right and left hands. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.I’ve read the literature and theses my father and grandfather left behind. I’msure it’s possible! My father confirmed my theories on his sickbed. He told meit was difficult but not impossible!”

[V11]

“Dwarven magic items have always been made with runes. But 200 years ago,we were attacked by the Demon Gods, and the last remaining royals left ourKingdom to join the fight against them. Technology from the outside flowed inand as a result, runes were regarded as outdated.”

[V11]

When the Demon Gods had rampaged through the Royal Capital, only onemember of the Dwarven royal family had survived. He was the last king of theDwarves, known as the “Runesmith King”, and after taking powerful magicitems with him on his journey, there had been nothing left behind which couldbe considered national treasures.

[V11]

Much like it was in this world, the humanoids called Dwarves inYggdrasilhad bonuses to craftsman-typeclasses.

[V11]

That said, all Dwarves had dark vision, which couldeasily overcome the darkness. Of course, this dark vision did not haveunlimited range, but it was enough to go from lantern to lantern.

[V11]

“Guu. He rules that fearsome structure. You underestimate him at yourperil! And the Dark Elf behind him; this forest belonged to them before theDemon Tree chased them away. They might well be mighty foes but he is notlistening.”

[V8]

“Ainz Ooal Gown-sama!”Isn’t he done yet?Ainz tiredly turned to look at the Naga.“This... this one will never betray thee. Only the fools who have never seenthy icy gaze that regards all before him as mere ants would dare betray thee.”“I did not think my eyes were as expressive as that... or is this a skill of yourstoo? Even Demiurge, that master of scrutiny, could not tell what I was trulythinking.”“It hardly qualifies as a skill, but this one can still sense whether someone isinterested in this one.”Ainz thought, perhaps that’s a Naga racial ability.

[V8]

Hm? We’re about to launch an attack and there’s only one Dragon here? The Dragons I know of grow stronger with age in other words, their bodiesget larger and more powerful. Given your size, you don’t seem particularlystrong... What’s the meaning of this?

[V11]

Dragons slowly gained the ability to use arcane magic during theirmaturation, but those were little more than innate abilities.

....

As Dragons grew, they naturally acquired the ability to use arcane spells evenwithout going out of their way to learn them. However, they could only cast afew spells.

[V11]

Nagarajas — they looked like snakes with scaly bodies and arms. They were acompletely different species from the similarly named Nagas, and they did notget along well with the latter. They were born with the ability to cast manyspells, and sometimes they would even equip themselves with swords andarmor.

[V12]

Magilos — born with the ability to use spells of up to the fourth tier. Thespells they could use apparently appeared on their bodies like tattoos. Theirmore powerful members were covered in tattoos. Sometimes there wereindividuals who could develop skills as magic casters, and those were rumoredto be able to cast spells of up to the fifth tier. They might be Lord level entities.

[V12]

he Magilos were quite long-lived, but she ought to have been more thanhalfway through her lifespan, given that Vijar had heard of her nicknamethroughout the hills when he was a child

[V13]

BBZ is a hetermorph and spiritual caster of the fourth tier (despite not being in the hero realm in terms of level). Ergo, Zern racial levels must contribute to his Spiritual caster  levels.

“No, no, great heroes. It’s not like that. I can cast spiritual spells of thefourth tier.”“The fourth tier?”Neia was surprised. The fourth tier of magic was a realm that only geniusescould barely reach after much hard work. In the Holy Kingdom, the only peoplewho could cast such spells were the high priestess Kelart Custodio and theHoly Queen Calca Bessarez.Neia glanced to the side, thinking Shizu would be as surprised as herself, butShizu’s face was as blank as ever. That was a difficulty rating 150 maid demonfor you such things did not even faze her..“A...ah...are all the Zern as powerful as you?”The prince made another strange sound, and thrashed like a caught fish.“I am special.”

[V13]

They are actually heteromorphs.

[V13]

The Shota prince with a harem is not quite a Hero,[though] he is quite a strong person. If he grows even more he will reach Hero-class.

[V13AT]

aa

What we can say is upon losing your life, one loses their soul or rather the body and soul separate. Draudillion and Cure Elim's abilities target or cause this specific eventuality. For some reason forcing the soul out accompanied by great deals of pain led to all the victims becoming undead, but it could of been the wild magic spell's effect in addition to ripping souls out. He was a Dragon Necromancer after all. Negative Energy causes similar amounts of pain in the living.

Apparently, people’s souls resided in their bodies, and when the body startedto decay, the soul would be summoned to the side of the gods. That was whythe dead were essentially buried in graveyards right away — in the embrace ofthe earth — but this was different for certain nobles and those in power

[V7]

The reason she did not become a Zombie but instead a Vampire is because she unconsciously user her talent to replicate Cure Elim's Wild Magic spell and absorbed the souls fo the people around her

[SS]

Usually after dying after becoming undead in other words -- a Dragonlord can no longer use Wild Magic. But Cure Elim exploited a loophole, using its Wild Magic to absorb a great number of souls from the surrounding area and using the stolen souls to compensate for the limitatons of the undead transformation, thus giving the undead Dragon the ability to use Wild magic.

[SS]

If the power behind wild magic can be stolen and put in things it's no surpirse you can animate things with it; if this thing gives people autonomy  why could it not? The only strange part is why it counts as HP in one case but not another. Looking at this another way, typically undead and Constructs are categrorized as beings lacking some core stat related to being alive. For the sake of brevity obvious examples ar ethings like Constiution. What is strange is why this power that can be stored in undead and constructs doesn't operate the same way if both normally don't require lifeforce(living) to function. If souls and life force are connected, we can only conclude for sure that wild magic is  powered by what released from dead bodies and what the body naturally produces and requires.

This actually has some precedecne, because beyond losing access to wild magic normally, undead do typically lose some aspects of themself as they become zombies, mindless or not.

“No, no, I didn’t mean that, Ani-san. From its movements, its lack ofregeneration, the way it felt when I cut into it... it felt weird... that’s right, like abody that was already dead. Something bizarre and foreboding like that.”A moving corpse? Like a Zombie?

[V8]

Dragons typically had excellent eyesight. Sometimes, they could tell what was happening even when a dust storm blocked their vision. Therefore, he did not actually need to charge into the tornado. All he had to do was deploy Zombies from his feet and attack from safety behind the tornado. Surely there was no reason for the arrogant Cure Elim to personally close the distance. In that case, why had he chosen to break through? The answer was because much like [Undeath Slave Sight], he had to rely on the Zombies’ eyesight when seeing through their eyes. Perhaps the Zombies that made up its eyes were magical beasts with exceptional powers of vision, but they had lost various abilities after becoming Zombies.

[SS]

We can confirm mindless undead lose both abilities and whatever Wild Magic Fuel is upon death. It is not strange to correlate the two. Especially since one of the abilities lost, regeneration,  is described as increased natural healing rates. Thus natural healing rates and innate racial abilities and enses can be lost or diminished upn death, implying a connection between life for e and many facets of a creature.

Because Trolls had the racial ability of regeneration, their wounds wouldrecover over time. However, regenerating its injuries would still take a while, which was troublesome.

[V8]

Guu watched in satisfaction as his minion spun and fell to the ground, andhe nodded. That was probably to verify that his weapon was working.“I see, is that Trollish regeneration at work? Quite an impressive sight whenyou witness it with your own eyes.”The wound surface healed over swiftly. It was not so much turning back timeas a fast-forward of the recovery process.

[V8]

In summation:

Many creatures lose racial abilites upon becoming undead

Dragonlords lose access to Wild Magic normally upon becoming undead

Unlike most other creatures Dragonlords can kill thseemself by overusing their ability or at the very least willingly destroying their soul.  As far as we know, that doesn't normally happen to other races or at least it's not talked about.

If we look at things another way, perhaps instant death effects are targeting lifeforce to begin with in general, as regeneration cannot jumpstart the body from suffering instant death Yet, only special instandt death spells stop resurrection style spells.

Ainz activated one of his abilities, which he had not had the chance to use,and was too powerful for this world.[Despair Aura V(Instant Death).]The surging aura billowed out from Ainz. The Trolls, Ogres and Guu went limp and collapsed like puppets whosestrings had been cut, slumping to the ground. The fallen monsters did not move. It was clear that although their bodieswere still warm, the flames of their life had been utterly extinguished. An old man’s voice rang through the silent cave.“What... what didst...thou do?”The Naga was curled up into a ball, doing his best to stay away from Ainz.Ainz turned around and replied:“I simply used a skill. Trolls can regenerate, but that does not immunizethem to instant death attacks... honestly, you lot are worthless. I was simplythinking that rather than slaughtering you all outright, I should see what usesyou might have, but since they refused to bend the knee, I decided to kill themall.

[V8]

The instant death spell I used,True Death, will invalidate lower-tierresurrection magic. Tell this to the people of the Kingdom. Tell them I will bemerciful to those who submit respectfully.”

That was because people opposed it — in particular, the factions led by thepriests. They believed that creating undead, creatures of death which hatedlife, was an act which stained the soul.

Bonus Bonus:

Deathguard Armband

Fufu. They’re weak, they’re cheap, but still, obtaining magic items in this worldmakes me happy... well, maybe I’m not as happy as Pandora’s Actor would be, but itdoes feel like I enjoy magic items too, huh?The first thing he did was appraise the magic items belonging to the four-armed demihuman. Among them, was the armband that had protected againstAinz’s instant death spell, and its name was the Deathguard Armband. It couldgrant immunity to death magic once a day.Ainz picked it up and twirled it in his hand several times, then put it back onthe table.Boring. If only there were better items. Now then

[V13]

This may be Ziggy's own delusions but the Deathguard Armband seems suspcious to him.

THAT SPAGHETTI IS SUSPICIOUS

What I mean is it guards only against instant death magic not instant death effects, yet it can counter super tier or regular tier magic. This suggests it's warded against only Instant Death magic or rather abilities with a Magic Attribute.

How strange it just negates all forms of death magic. Yet it appears 'weak' to Ainz despite the fact it takes high levels of data for YGGDRASIL magic to grant immunities(apparently). It's daily limited but still countering not only any Tier but even Super Tier is not something we can overlook. What doesn't add up is how something athat appears so weak can have such a powerful effect

Seeing as Cure Elim somehow survived a Super Tier TGOALID buffed spell... It's not wrong to think it may be a wild magic item as some sort of wild magic may exist to resist not only instant death but counter instant death measures as well. But why would draogn lords evne make an instant death item? Natively the precedence exists with wild magic but logistically its strange. Just as it is strange they would ever make Razor Edge. Still they made the wild magic ring so...

Basically some doubt remeains or what we may call plausible deniability.

Because it's limited use and weak it does seem like it may be a New World Artifact or a wild magic item instead of a YGGDRASIl item. This does support the idea we established earlier:

Wild Magic Items don't radiate mana for Arcane Sight

New World Artifacts radiate strange magnitutdes of mana for their effects and appear weak. So something like Razor Edge may be weak in terms of YGGDRASIL item level or mana level, but it's effect can be notable.

If we presume this fact is true then we can actually apply our findings (Ziggy's head canon hur hur). Basically as Ainz knew this was a magic item, this has to be a New World Artifact. The fact it counters mana and manaless tier magic (regular and super tier) and possibly even wild magic (see how Keno's talent treats all three the same as just magic),  that does call into question any possible enchantment process using tier magic.

Abaa. That reminds me in Overlord instant Death system magic is a com-plicated subject, In a sense it is right to think of it as it is described asmagic that inβlicts instant death. Because it is troublesome Instant Death is magic however ...!In Volume 13 the item the Demi-human held protects against even theSuper Tier Magic’s AoE [Black Harvest]! It’s amazing!Ainz-san’s Level 5 Aura? That isn’t magic! It’s Instant Death!

[TWTR]

It's strange because normally super tier spells rank higher in terms of Spell Priority in some instances. So if we believe it is enchanted it would mean someone made it able to usurp the norm of priority (World class, super tier class, Specialization class, effect class). For the sake of completetion, world class are abilities like world enemy, world class classes, and world class items that ignore all others, super tier are those like Wish Upon a Star only world class surpasses, Specialization class are things like what Ainz and HeroHero get which ignore immunities(so only some rules based on build mainly), items, gear etc to force effects through, and effect class are the normal checks and balances of immunities and resistances.

A good example of this is how wild magic seems to operate on World class levles as it can block world class items and even Cure Elim survived Ainz's The Goal of All Life is Death trump card suggesting an ability of higher priority blocked it or a method to survive it was used.

“...My anger was not directed at you, Albedo. It was because I learned thatmy wish did not come true, even after activating the power of the ring.Seeing how Albedo remained silent, Ainz knew that his explanation wasinsufficient, so he continued:“...There is only one thing which can trump the power of the super tier spellWish Upon A Star.Perhaps earlier, he might have thought it was interference from somethingin this world, but Ainz was confident that it was not the case. This was becausehe had sensed it as he activated the ring.“It, it can’t be... that would be...”“Yes, Albedo. There is only one thing which can do that... the power of WorldClass Items.

[V3]

Her Talent is ”the ability to store any spell that she has seen or been tar-geted with – but only one – and use it for her own.” She can even use it onsuper-tier spells or Wild Magic. However, when casting the spells, its ef-fects are calculated from her own stats, and she has to pay any costs thatneed to be paid. For instance, if she were to cast Fallen Down, it wouldtake the same amount of time to cast, and it would work off her lowerability scores, so it would be less damaging than the same spell as castby Ainz. However, she will be counted as having met the ability require-ments for casting the spell. Also, she cannot willingly dismiss the stored spell. She can only releaseit by using it once, which can be taken, as a stretch, to be a weakness. Asfor whether a spell is stored, that depends on whether she is willing todo so.

Her talent is thatany magic she observes being cast or was cast on her could be saved andcast by her whenever she wants, this includes Super Tier and Wild Magic. However, all spells will be scaled to her ability level and all spell castingcomponent requirements still apply. For example, if she casts the SuperTierspell[FallenDown], it’llhavealongercasttimeandlessdamagecom-pared to Ainz.

[SS]

Do you see? It only protects against instant death magic not instant death wholesale, marking a distinction in Attribute. Then again Talents can only copy magic too... Strangely enough Tier, Super Tier, and Wild do all share an attriubute o fMagic however. iZiggy finds that strange considering how Martial Arts and Skills lack this designation.
